Sam Gross, PhD
Head of Bioinformatics & ML/AI
Sam comes to Moonwalk from GRAIL, where he played a key role in the development of the computational aspects of the Galleri cfDNA methylation-based test for the early detection of cancer. In the early days of GRAIL, Sam built much of the foundational data processing and analysis software for the then-nascent methylation assay. As the technology progressed, Sam led multiple teams that further developed and productionized components of the test such as optimization-based panel design and machine learning sample classification.
Prior to GRAIL, Sam worked as a software engineer at Google and Verily. There, he developed large-scale production machine learning systems as well as distributed systems for genomic data analysis.
Sam earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University, with thesis work on the application of machine learning to genome annotation.
