Shingo Kajimura, PhD
Professor, Harvard Medical School
Dr. Kajimura is a principal investigator at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.
Shingo Kajimura wants to understand how our body maintains energy metabolism in response to environmental stress, such as nutrition and temperature, and how regulatory circuits go wrong in metabolic diseases. Kajimura and his team are particularly interested in adipose tissue, which can dynamically remodel cellular composition and metabolism following external and internal cues. Metabolic reprogramming plays a central role in energy homeostasis, as a bioenergetic defect in adipose tissue leads to obesity, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance. The team’s overarching goal is to generate a blueprint for rewiring bioenergetics by defined factors, thereby restoring metabolic health. This work will have a fundamental impact on understanding metabolism, cancer, and aging.
